Novice & Old Timers Race/Rally 2022
All members of Queen City are invited to participate in the Novice & Old Timers 2022 Navigation Contest. This event will be held on March 27th, 28th and 29th, 2022. On Sunday at around 1700 hrs there will be a Burger Bash on the middle deck of the Clubhouse. The bar will be open. Rally results will be unveiled and special awards will be presented. The Trophy will be awarded for the best overall finish. Additionally, although the 2022 IPBA rules do not allow multiple Contestants on the same boat for rallys in Lake Washington, we will allow multiple rallyers on the same boat.
Navigation Aids: Radar may be on Standby and NOT USED except when needed under IPBA rules for safety purposes only. Auto pilots may be used if not connected to GPS. Auto pilots and other instruments may display magnetic/Gyro. GPS compasses must only display “heading” and not course over ground (COG). Cellular telephones must be turned off. GPS SOG WILL NOT be allowed in this Rally. A Chartplotter with GPS connected and showing BOAT ICON; without predictor line, shall be PERMITTED except that only original chart aids to navigation, marks, depths, shorelines, docks, etc can be displayed (i.e. NO USER ADDED marks, routes, circles, lines, etc; except for the new 520 Bridge). NO other GPS data (SOG, Lat/Lon, COG, cross track error, speed averaging, etc.) is allowed and all other such info shall be covered with opaque tape. Tach, Compass and Boat Icon ONLY. A second Chartplotter and/or Computer using Navigation programs, not connected to GPS or displaying or using GPS data, course made good, speed, tracking, Time of Day or Lat Lon may be used in place of small scale printed charts. A large scale (2 or 3 page) printout of the course is still required which the observer may need to review. A DATA Logger may be used to record your track and supplied to the judges if needed.
Log turn in will be by 1600 hours on Sunday. Please use the log calculation worksheet either as an “excel” printout or hand copied to a blank form; and give them to Bob Lindal in the clubhouse or slip under door into back of Trophy case by the lower floor restrooms. (don’t put them in the Treasurer’s mail slot or under the office door!) DO NOT leave them on Suzy Q (which is in Anacortes). Please calculate the error in seconds in each leg and percentage of error and enter on the worksheet before turning in to assist in calculating the results.
The standard rules of log racing will apply to this event except that you need not have an observer (see Navigation aids below). Remember that this is intended to be a fun event so please make all your courses, speeds, marks and calculations as you would in an IPBA sanctioned event.
The recommended chart is NOAA chart 18447. The Official mileage is 13.5 nautical miles, which is not to be exceeded. You are allowed a 10% throttle adjustment. Please maintain a distance of 200 yards at cruise speed and 100 yards at slow speed from any shoreline, docks or the bridge. The Rules of the Road are to be strictly observed.
Any Novice (or any rallyer) is welcome to use the “Standard” rally layout and worksheet Or use the Leg distance/Bearing table. Simply time your boat, you may calculate the time to run each leg and the rally (or we will do it for you), then run the rally and see how you did. Ask any other log rallyer for help.
The best finish by a QCYC member will receive the Ruth White (Eagle) Trophy. The best novice will receive the Novice Cup. The best finish by an Old Timer will receive the Old Timers Trophy.
