Icebreakers! A QCYC Speaker Series You Don't Want To Miss - 5/24

Icebreakers!

Dear QCYC Members,

We are very fortunate to count among our membership some very experienced captains.

One of the most experienced, with over 60 years as a professional mariner, is Captain Bill Anderson.

On Wednesday evening, May 24th, Captain Anderson will present: At The Top & Bottom of the World: Images and Observations from the Arctic and Antarctica

Captain Anderson visited both the Arctic region and Antarctic continent multiple times as commander of the vessel during his 27 years of Coast Guard service and he'll share stunning images and interesting stories about life aboard a USCG ice breaker.  He had five adventures to the Arctic and three to Antarctica.

Captain (Retired) William Anderson USCG, grew up on Hood Canal near Silverdale.

He graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1961.

Coast Guard service included: Sailed on USCGC Northwind as deck watch officer, home port Seattle; Executive Officer on USCGC Fir, a buoy tender here in Seattle; Sailed on USCGC Eagle training Cadets at the Academy; Commanded USCGC Clover, a Buoy tender in Sitka Alaska;  Executive Officer on Polar Star at Seattle and Commanding Officer of Polar Sea at Seattle.

He retired from the Coast Guard in 1988 after 27 years Commissioned service.

In 1989, he sat for and passed the license exam for Master, any tonnage, upon oceans.

He sailed briefly with Icicle Seafoods, running a crab processor in the Bearing Sea and later a power scow fish tender in Bristol Bay and Southeast Alaska.

He joined the Puget Sound Pilots in 1992 and worked as a pilot here for 12 years, retiring in 2004.

Presently, he's a consultant with the Pacific Maritime Institute in Seattle, where he teaches and facilitates continuing education courses for members of the merchant marine.  He also works on special projects there for the marine industry as a subject matter expert in ship-handling and navigation best practices.
