QCYC Speaker Series is pleased to present: South Sound Secrets: Hidden & Not So Hidden Cruising Destinations
Our speaker is Derek VanDyke, from the Washington State Parks & Recreation Commission. Derek is a fellow boater, although he tells me his boat has a tall stick in the middle.
I don't understand why but he says it goes really slow so he's found all these really cool spots in the nearby South South he wants to share with us! Derek is based out of Gig Harbor, so the South Sound is his backyard and cruising ground so he's had the time to get to know it very well.
He'll share hidden gems in the South Sound – great anchorages, funky marinas, mooring buoys with the best views and more and he promised LOTS of pictures! Derek might also toss in a few boating safety tips in the "Mom snuck spinach into the spaghetti sauce" kind of way! Gotta keep his boss happy!
I have it on excellent authority from our good friends across Portage Bay that Derek is a fun, informed and engaging presenter.
Derek serves as the Recreational Boating Safety Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Boating Program at the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. He develops strategies, key partnerships, and programs in order to influence target boating audiences to adopt basic safety behaviors. He is an avid boater that loves to kayak, sail, cruise the islands and fish both coastal and inland waters. His current position combines both his passion and skills with his desire to help others.
