Carpet on Docks

Moorage rules at QCYC prohibit attaching anything to the docks without authorization.  Members have historically attached scraps of carpeting to piers, pillars, and pilings in hopes of minimizing "dock rash" resulting from incidental contact with hard surfaces when docking. In some cases, carpeting was attached many years ago and it simply remained in place after the slip changed occupants.

Sadly, wherever and whenever this carpeting gets wet, from rain or from boat washing, it traps moisture against the wood.  This has resulted in wood rot, to a substantial degree in many locations. Carpeting should not be used as a permanently attached fender.

During the Docks Fun Day on May 20, under supervision of Ron Stevenson and Eric Lindbeck, volunteers removed most of the carpeting on Dock Two. Plans are in place to collect the carpeting from slips on Dock One in June.

If you have relied upon carpeting nailed into the marina structure to protect your boat when docking, please be aware it may have been removed and it will be necessary to compensate by deploying fenders rigged on the boat.
