The pump out is now working very nicely.
A group of guys on Docks Fun Day applied their collective genius (we figured that a collection of QCYC guys more or less equals one genius) to get things working nicely again. We restored the prime, tightened down the flanges around the pump diaphram so water (along with some stinky stuff) stopped spraying out each time the pump piston descended.
We noticed that the pump gear box was completely dry. Not just "low", completely empty of lubricant. We filled it with 90 weight gear lube, and will drain and replace that gear lube in March. Not sure if the original gear lube somehow escaped- or whether somebody didn't realize the pump was shipped "dry" when first installed. We will keep a closer eye on the lubrication going forward.
The sign detailing proper use of the pump *is* still attached, after all. Please follow the instructions if the pump does not appear to work properly- many situations are quickly corrected by a difference in technique.
Special thank to Duane Engle, who not only engineered much of our approach to this cruddy situation last Saturday, but who has since returned to check out the condition of a "flapper" valve. Thanks,, Duane.
