Dignity, honor, courtesy, and respect

Several new members were sworn in at the general meeting on June 8. A hearty welcome to one and all. QCYC is a great club. You will make new friendships here. Some of them will be very close.

Those of us who have been members for a long time, or a little less time (only 10 years for Jan and me, not very long by QCYC standards) should pay some attention during the initiation ceremonies. The final commitment made by all incoming members, and a commitment made by those of us who have been members for a while, is to "treat fellow Queen City Yacht Club members with dignity, honor, courtesy, and respect."

There isn't a lot of happiness flowing through these member forums this week. There's one thread about a few late night dock parties at the outstation over Memorial Day weekend. Apparently there was one incident where a member trying to sleep was told to "get the F off my boat" when he visited a neighboring party boat to see whether music could be turned down. Rather unfortunate, to say the least. Clearly a lack of treating fellow members with dignity, honor, courtesy (like turning down the Muzak at a reasonable hour...), or respect.

Then there's the parking lot issue. People who routinely violate the parking lot rules, most commonly by parking multiple vehicles on the lot, are putting their personal convenience above any consideration for other members.

In an ideal world, we would be able to shred the rule book and throw away the scraps. In an ideal world, QCYC members would live up to our pledge to treat fellow members with dignity, honor, courtesy, and respect.
