Log boom on Opening Day

We've never participated in any type of log boom activities before (Seafair, July 4th, Opening Day) but are planning to try it this year.  In fact our reservation application for Opening Day was mailed just the other day.  I'd love to hear what you have experienced on the log boom during Opening Day and gain from your experience.

Areas I'd particulary like to hear about are how do you actually tie up to the log boom, does it matter when you get there if you have a reserved spot (for instance do you have to get there the day the log boom becomes available or can you wait until Friday afternoon), is it OK to leave your boat unattended overnight, can you bring a dinhgy and tie it to your bow when not in use.  Any info would be appreciated.
