Hi Bill:
Thanks so much for your courage in bringing up issues such
as this that need "fixing."
I believe it is appropriate to have the option to vote by
mail, or e-mail and eliminate the requirement that one must
be in attendance at a meeting. QCYC needs to encourage new
(young)members to join and then have the ability to vote in
matters that affect their club. It is very difficult for a
member with young children to attend a mid-week evening
meeting in order to vote. I'll use the example of my
children to explain why:
Both parents work and at odd shifts. They try to and
should focus their attention on their children in the
evenings. But should they choose to attend a meeting in
order to vote, here's what it entails:
-a quick dinner, including the probability the kids will
be cranky because the parents are going out.
-$12/hour for a babysitter to attend the meeting only to
return home to lunches to fix for kids the next day and get
themselves ready for work.
All in all, attending a QCYC meeting in order to vote means
a harried evening, an evening away from the kids, and $12
per hour or around $40. How would you choose to spend that
evening?
Yet the young members are the future leaders of QCYC and
they ought to easily be included in the "vote." The Club
needs their input and they should be made to feel they are
partners in the policies of their club.
Give all members an equal opportunity for input that is
convenient for old and young alike. Let all members have
the right to vote by mail or e-mail.
Thanks so much for being such a great leader.
