The nose of the camel?

The bedouins have a traditional saying. "If the camel gets its nose under the edge of the tent, the rest of the camel will be not far behind"

Pacific NW recreational boaters have reason to watch the edge of our collective tent.

The Center for Biological Diversity has long proposed a "whale protection zone" in the San Juan Islands.

What does that mean, exactly?

According to their web site, "Vessel traffic would be prohibited between April 1 and October 31." At other times, vessels would be restricted to "no wake" speeds.

The Center for Biological Diversity is filing suit against the Trump administration this morning, insisting that the orcas should be protected by this restriction.

Initially, the area involved is only 10 square miles. Initially. There's the nose of the camel.

The feeding grounds of our southen resident orcas extend throughout the San Juan and Gulf Islands. When the 10 square mile area into which we would not be allowed to enter between April and October fails to "save the whales",  we can be sure the area involved will increase dramatically.
