Private Marina to Overtake Squirrel Cove in BC?

This may be of interest to those of us who cruise north of the border each summer.

Forwarded email follows

Good Day

This message is forwarded for your information and any action you feel necessary. Please take a look at the map which is attached to this email.  It would appear that if this goes through as proposed there will be virtually no space left to just go in and swing on the anchor.

Stay safe
Paul

Subject: CPS news Re Squirrel Cove development application

To all Members of Nanaimo Power and Sail Squadron (copied to the VIND Council members)

At the General Meeting tonight I informed the members about an application to develop a marina in Squirrel Cove. Anyone who has cruised in the Desolation Sound area will know that this is one of the most popular and secure anchorages in the area.  Those present were sufficiently disturbed that they agreed that I should send the basic information to all the members for whom we have email addresses. I attach a file that has some notes put together by Bill Wilson, plus a short version of the management plan and a map of the proposed development  showing the distribution of docks and mooring buoys.

This issue was also discussed at the Council of BC Yacht Clubs meeting on Saturday.. The Council is opposed to this application in its current form, although not to some form of marina and docks in the cove.   The main problem is the fact that the proposed mooring buoys take up virtually all of the anchorage area in the cove.

The other concern of the Council, is that this may just be the tip of the iceberg and, if this is successful, other anchorages may be subject to similar applications.

We are asking that any members who feel strongly about this proposal write an email to Cameron Bezanson at the Integrated Land Management Bureau of the Provincial Government (contact information is given below).   At the meeting I said that any comments must be received by Cameron by June 16 th .   However, when I got home I received an e-mail from Bill Wilson stating that the comment date has been extended until the end of June.
