Smart plug
A few weeks ago one of our members lost his boat to a bad power plug. From experience we all know they wear after a while and the contacts arc and at some point they heat up, and occasionally they catch fire. A Seattle entrepreneur came out with a new plug and receptacle that can be retrofitted to your existing yellow Marinco cord and replace the boat side plug receptacle and the cord plug.. The plug and receptacle are waaaay safer than the Marinco plug as three things happen. The first is there is a breaker in the plug that disconnects when it sees excessive heat. The second is it can only go in one way, and locks when you push it in. There's no trying to find out which prong has the "L" shaped contact, it only goes in one way. The third is the plug has 100% electrical contact with the boat side.
During Friday lunch several of us were talking about it and thought it would be interesting if we could get a good deal for our club if we bought several of them at one time. I went to Fisheries and West Marine and a couple of places on line and the prices ranged from $180-$225.00. plus shipping or if local we would have to pay tax. A local dealer has offer us a really good price, $140.00 includes tax. If we buy a lot the price may be a little better. From my point of view it's just a pass through from the dealer to us. He's not going to make anything just allow us to upgrade our electrical for a fair price.
Just word of mouth has a list so far of 18 club members. I am going to make a flyer or two and lay them on the round table. Debra said she will take an envelope with your name and a check for 143.75. On the 15th of March I will buy the plugs. This is a one time shot so if you have an interest please get you name and check into Debra. We don't want to run this through the club as it's extra work for our treasurer. You can write the check for cash or to me, Dick Geving. If there are any issues I will stand behind the funds and the dealer for the cost. I can be reached by e-mail Gevino@aol.com. Or my cell phone, 206 947-8097
