Smart Plug now NEC certified for dockside pedestals

I spoke to Ken Smith today, and he shared the news that Smart Plug was just certified by the NEC. In simple terms, this means that Smart Plug can build dock pedestals for use in marinas, and that they will be considered up to "code".

As we look at rewiring the QCYC marina, we might want to consider installing these receptacles. We should at least get a competitive quote before going with something else. Nobody would be forced to reconfigure their existing shorepower plugs, there are adapters available that will permit the old fashioned Marinco plugs to connect to the Smart Plug system.

According to Ken Smith, insurance companies are starting to discount premiums for policy holders with Smart Plug systems installed. (He mentioned one that issue a $150 rebate check).

Shorepower is the number one cause of fire in marinas, so as we go forward with the plans for rewiring we might want to put in as safe a system as possilbe.
