Spill Kits, Coming Soon to your QCYC Dock
Spill Kits, Coming Soon to your QCYC Dock
Before Labor Day, you will notice some bright yellow containers on each of three docks at the mainstation. They look like medium size garbage cans.
These are "oil spill kits" with some absorbent materials. They include a way to rig a small containment "boom" should your boat do the unthinkable thing and begin leaking fuel into the marina. There are instruction booklets, goggles, haz-mat disposal bags, and all the other stuff we need to have on hand to demonstrate the club is being proactive regarding fuel spills.......(and may help keep us off the hot seat for any $HUGE fines for which we might otherwise be liable),
If you use up some of the supplies, please let Docks Committee know so we can order some replacements.
If you boat is leaking oil, first step will be to use the items in the oil spill kit to try to contain the pollution. If it's more than a minor incidental spill, federal law requires a boater to notify the authorities.
There's also a very long boom, which has been "up in the rafters somewhere on Dock Three" and we will relocate that to Cummins Hall where it can be easily found by all club memberfs. If you dump a huge tank of fuel, you may need to additionally get the long boom from Cummins Hall. It's supposed to be long enough to encircle the largest boats in the marina.
By general observation, it seems that people who try to do the right thing and mitigate the damage from a fuel spill are typically *not* slapped with the giant fines. If we're going to be the kind of organization that takes the responsible approach, our members need to have access to the necessary supplies with which to do so.
