USCG considering the elimination of some Aids to Navigation

All of a sudden the government wants to save money. The proposed savings will result from the abandonment or removal of certain ATON (aids to navigation) in our nation's waterways. According to the USCG, in an era when most boats have adequate electronics the ATON's are redundant.

If that isn't a 180 from not that many years ago. "Don't rely on those electronics, use the official charts!" has suddenly become, "We're going to stop publishing charts [last year] and we won't continue marking certain hazards. You better rely on those electronics instead."

This isn't a done deal, yet. There's a hearing in Seattle on June 3.
